This included the loss of the three southern provinces, which later became Malaysia’s three northern states.

In 1932, a bloodless revolution resulted in a new constitutional monarchy. During the war, Thailand was allied with Japan. Yet after the war, it became an ally of the United States. Thailand then went through a series of coups d’йtat, but eventually progressed towards democracy in the 1980s

The waters around the islands off Krabi are crystal clear. Although Krabi can be crowded, its beaches are stunning. Phra Nang beach is particularly dramatic with its mountainous rock pillars that tower over creating one of the most beautiful beaches in the world.

The Koh Dam Group is suitable for an overnight stop. Koh Dam Khwan has a beautiful sandy split beach that is only revealed at mid tide. This is a lovely spot to anchor off and enjoy a few secluded hours with nothing else around.

The Phi Phi Islands are among the most spectacular of Thailand with their magnificent scenery, secluded bays and white sandy beaches. Enjoy the restaurants and live entertainment offered on the island.

Langkawi with its 99 surrounding islands is a paradise that longs to be discovered. Tourism has is on the increase. Only 4 of these islands are inhabited. As the northern most Balearic Island, the coastline is beautiful, lined with clear water coves and the whitest of beaches. With the nearest main city being 150 miles away, Barcelona, the yacht can be a true experience of relaxation. We decided on a weekly yacht charter trip, which gave us ample time to discover the island.

During the first couple of days, we anchored in various sea covers and took many a swims in the warm water. We worked on sun tans, and unwinded properly. Later on in the week we decided to get energetic and eager to see what awaits deep within the Mediterranean Sea. Diving and Snorkeling packages are included on many yacht charters, and this one was no exception. We were able to watch the colourful fish as they swim around the boat, with moments that we wished we could catch on some sort of underwater camera. Lastly, we finished off the next to last day with a climbing session off one of Menorca’s scenic cliffs.

All around it was the right combination of rest, relaxation and exploration. The yacht itself has snorkelling equipment available, but can also arrange it so that a fully qualified private diving instructor (PADI) is there for deep sea diving. Sail for a couple of hours and you’re bound to find a new location to explore.

With yacht charter holidays, many companies such as Go Nautic (who specialise in Menorca sailing holidays) insist that you plan your day according to your wishes, and do not push pre-planned itineraries. However they do keep you informed on weather conditions and any changes that may be necessary. Should you want to get off the yacht though; many local towns around the coastline have restaurants providing the finest in local cuisine, and a more country-esque vibe. Climate is usually a sure shot, as sunshine is abundant. Temperatures range from 15 Celsius in the winter, to about 20-25 in the spring and autumn, while touching the 30’s in the summer. Neptune’s Treasure is a serene restaurant and bar further down n the beach. On weekends the bar becomes lively with music and an influx of Tortola residents looking for a weekend escape.

BEEF ISLAND

Trellis Bay The Last Resort has been synonymous with live entertainment since the beginning of yacht chartering. Enjoy great food and live entertainment. On the south shore of the bay, there is quite an assortment of local shops, artist studios, bars and restaurants. The monthly Trellis Bay Full Moon party is anticipated all year long. Two large ‘fireballs’ are lit while locals dance the night away.

COOPER ISLAND

Cooper Island Beach Club is a popular restaurant and bar are obeautiful Manchioneel Beach. The island is an ideal anchorage spot to stop and have a drink while you watch the sun set over The Drake Channel.

JOST VAN DYKE

White Bay The Soggy Dollar Bar is famous for its ‘Painkillers’, which were actually first invented here. The original recipe is a secret family recipe. Great Harbor Foxy’s Tamarind Bar has certainly changed from the early 70’s. Charter vacationers used to listen to true calypso while eating lobster with all of the locals at one long table. It has grown enormously. All kinds of talented local bands and musicians play here. The music and dancing can go on late into the night. Besides the bar and restaurant, there is also a large gift shop with a wide variety of local items, including CDs and the obligatory Foxy’s T-shirt. Be sure to bring something personal you can tack to the ceiling, anything from Business cards to hats and even underwear is acceptable. This place is for those who are easily offended , but most people at least stop in and have a drink.

Little Jost Van Dyke ‘Foxy’s Taboo’ restaurant and bar is the new ‘in’ place. You are more likely to meet Foxy here than at his original bar. Moorings are available, but this can be a rough spot in unsettled weather.

MARINA CAY

Now owned by Pussers, this famous island resort has a bar at the very top of the island, offering great sunset views and live music some nights.

NORMAN ISLAND

The infamous Willie T is an all out party destination with plenty of drinking and wild antics. Expect the unexpected. Not recommended for children or the faint hearted! Pirates Bight offers a more relaxed way to watch the sunset, but also has music, dancing and a very popular Happy Hour with every exotic frozen drink you can imagine.

TORTOLA

At Cane Garden Bay, Quito Rhymer is an extremely popular local musician who can be found performing at his bar/restaurant, ‘Quito’s Gazebo’. Further down the beach, Al Henley’s Big Banana Paradise Club, Rhymers Beach Bar, Stanley’s Welcome Bar and Myett’s Garden and Grill all offer meals, drinks and live music on selected nights that can be heard from your anchorage spot out onto the water.   ‘The Pub’, below the Fort Burt Hotel, was the original bar in Road Town in The 60’s and 70’s and is a lively hot spot today. There are bars at Village Cay Marina, Mariner Inn, Pussers waterfront and many other locations in town, but these can hardly be considered beach bars, although many people visit them when embarking and disembarking from their Caribbean Yacht Charter.

VIRGIN GORDA

Spanish TownThe Bath and Turtle Pub often has live music and dancing.

The Baths Poor Man’s Bar is the ultimate watering hole to relax after snorkeling.

North SoundLeverick Bay has a beach barbecue every Friday, with live music and entertainment. The Sand Box is a casual bar and restaurant offering lunch and dinner. The Bitter End is a large resort with shops, water sport facilities, restaurant and an English pub, but they often also have live music and entertainment. Saba Rock is an excellent restaurant and bar located on a tiny island. Enjoy the popular 2-4-1 Happy Hour, while watching a fabulous sunset over The Sound.

West End/Sopers Hole

Pussers Landing & Company Store has two restaurants and a variety of shops, but it also has a popular bar. Here’s a hint, when you order your first ‘Pussers Pain Killer’, ask for a card. After visiting three different Pussers bars (and having a painkiller at each) you will get a Pussers Triangle Pennant you can fly from your boat – or hang at home!

While most vacationers like to enjoy the comforts of their luxury yacht charter, a true Caribbean Yacht Charter isn’t complete until you stop for a cocktail at a few of the best spots in the British Virgin Islands. Sailing in the area can also be done in Gozo. There are actually a number of points that you can choose from. For one, you can go to Xatt L-Ahmar. It’s a very flat area, and thus very good for some snorkeling and shallow swimming. At the northeast is Dahlet Qorrot. Qbajjar Bay, meanwhile, is great for surfing. The currents will be enough to make your heart pump and your adrenalin to rush. The wind is also perfect for sailors but not so much for the beginners.

Lastly, spend your holiday at Comino. It’s sandwiched between Gozo and mainland Malta. Now, you may be deceived by what you can initially see. It looks like an ordinary huge rocky outcrop, but when you get to explore the island, you can discover the wide variety of flora and fauna. There are also a few historical attractions in the area such as the Blue Lagoon, which is a sheltered cove. Comino is also near an uninhabited islet called Cominotto. It has white sand and turquoise water, which is very good for swimming.

So when you’re thinking of sailing in Malta, you don’t have to worry about where to look for a yacht. There are different that can offer you these facilities at great rates. You simply have to bring along the spirit of fun with you.

The Balearic Islands or Islas Baleares are to be found western Mediterranean several hundred kilometres of the eastern coast of Spain. This island group comprises Mallorca, Minorca, Ibiza, Cabrera and Formentera. There are three airports in the islands making access extremely easy. At Palma de Mallorca on Mallorca, Ibiza on Ibiza and Mahon on Minorca. Access is also possible from the Spanish mainland via ferry from Barcelona, Denia and Valencia.

The Balearic Islands yacht charter season generally runs from April to the end of October. July and August are the hottest and tends to have lighter winds; it is also the most expensive time to charter a yacht. April-May and September-October have a lot of plus points, the temperatures are more comfortable, those sailing are likely to getter better winds, it is not as expensive and while ashore you will avoid crowds of July and August.

Corsica is a French island in the Mediterranean Sea. After Sicily, Sardinia and Cyprus, Corsica is the fourth largest island in the Mediterranean It is located southwest of Italy, southeast of France and to north of the island of Sardinia. Corsica is an exceptional place for a yacht charter holiday. Known for its rugged mountains and towering cliffs, Corsica contains many fishing villages and unspoiled places that make for ideal yacht anchorages.

With six hundred miles of coastline to discover, there is a lot to explore on Corsica. A two week charter is necessary if you aim to completely sail around Corsica, a trip of 330 NM. A popular alternative is to combine Corsica and Sardinia in their charter. The southern part of Corsica is separated form Sardinia by a short strait, only few miles long.

The climate of Corsica is typically Mediterranean and provides sunny warm and dry summers. In the height of summer, the coast of Corsica sees average temperature of 25°C but it can rise to 35°. As a general rule the north is hotter than the south. The sun shines for an average of 280 days per year, concentrated from April to October, making the Mediterranean summer, the perfect time for a yacht charter in Corsica.

Crete is the largest island in the Aegean Sea and marks the boundary between Europe and Africa. It is 140 miles long (E – W) and around 20 miles wide (N – S). The centre of the island is mountainous and it is rocky and barren in the main. The exceptions being the plains on the north coast and Lasithi Plateau in the mountains.

In the summer the prevailing wind is the infamous Meltemi from the NW – WNW. July and August sees the winds at their strongest, force 5 – 6 on the northern coast but more often a more gentle force 3 to 4. The spring and autumn sees winds form the south, force 2 – 4. The southern coast is notorious for strong squalls the blow down from the mountains. There is little in the way of warning and they can be violent close inshore. It gets very hot on the island during the summer months with the average daily temperature reaching 35 deg C in July and August and temperatures as high as 40 deg C are not uncommon.

Croatia’s beautiful coastline with more than one thousand stunning islands only a short distance from the mainland offers safe easy navigation in clear blue waters. The mainland coast consists of Istria, the Croatian Riviera and Dalmatia and in addition there are an incredible 1,187 islands of which only 67 are inhabited.

Croatia is situated on the Adriatic Sea, opposite Italy, in the Northern Mediterranean Sea. With a history going back over a thousand years, it first appeared on the political map of Europe in 1992, following the break up of Yugoslavia after a bloody civil war.

The climate is typical of the Mediterranean and provides for pleasant holidays throughout the year. The best season for sailing in Croatia is early summer with good winds in May and June mainly from the S/SE. Mornings tend to be calm with the wind increasing later in the afternoon to around 15 – 20 knots. The months of July and August see calmer conditions which is OK for those who don’t mind motoring. Summer temperatures average between 26 to 30°C and the sea temperature in summer is about 25єC.

The Cyclades is the central group of islands in the Aegean Sea but is still considerd part of the Mediterranean Sea. They can be split into three groups, Northern Cyclades, Central Cyclades and Southern Cyclades. The areas prevailing wind during the summer months is the infamous Meltemi blowing from the N-NW. It is first felt in June and becomes stronger through July, August and September when it can reach force 8. It dies down in October. In the spring and autumn gales are common from the N and the SE. The summer months are hot, average temperatures are 25 deg C and temperatures often reach 35 deg C.

The Dodecanese is a complex of over 163 islands and islets of which only 26 are inhabited. The islands form part of Greece’s eastern border with Turkey. In the summer the prevailing wind is the Meltemi that blows from the N and NW. It blows from June through to October and at its peak may reach a force 7. The spring and autumn sees winds from the SE, usually with strengths between 2 and 4. Summer temperatures can rise to 35 deg C. The winters are mild.

Sardinia is the second largest island in the Mediterranean being only slightly smaller the Sicily, the largest. It lies in the western Mediterranean off the western coast of the Italian peninsula and just to the south of the French island of Corsica, separated by the narrow Strait of Bonifacio. Mountains dominate much Sardinia’s interior; the highest point is Monti del Gennargentu at 1,834 metres. The coast boasts some of the most wonderful beaches in the Mediterranean.

The yacht charter season in Sardinia generally runs from April to the end of October. High season is July and August, when the temperatures (around 35єC) and prices are at their highest. May and June, September and October are well worth considering. Prices are lower, the temperature more comfortable and for those wanting to sail rather than motor round Sardinia the winds are likely to be more suitable.Turkey is well known for its Gulets. Mid July through to mid September are the busiest and most expensive months to cruise the Turkish coast. Temperature can exceed 40 deg C. May and late September are a little cooler and cheaper. The Caribbean is a region of the Americas consisting of the Caribbean Sea, its islands and the surrounding coasts. It is located southeast of Northern America, east of Central America and to the north and west of South America. The Caribbean comprises more than 7,000 islands, islets, reefs and cays. The name “Caribbean” is named after the Caribs, one of the one of the dominant Amerindian groups in the region at the time of European contact during the late 15th century.

There are plentiful flights to various island throughout the Caribbean. But some of the islands have several connections in order to get there. When these tradewinds arrive close to the island of Cuba they tend to be overcome by other minor jet streams across the Caribbean region. Normally hurricanes which at times effect the region usually strike northwards of Grenada and to the west of Barbados. The principal hurricane belt arcs to northwest of the island of Barbados in the Eastern Caribbean. During the November through January winter months; the prevailing wind is 15 – 20 knots from the northeast. On and off all winter, the famous “Christmas Winds” blow at 25 – 30 knots for several day periods. Beginning in February and finishing in June, the winds move from a northeast direction to southeast when 10 – 15 knots can be expected. Late summer through autumn is the Caribbean’s rainy season. However, rain squalls can occur at any time but are usually short lived. Average high temperatures range from 85° to 90° with the highest in July through October; average low temperatures are about 10° less.

The geography in the Caribbean region varies from one place to another. Some islands in the region have relatively flat terrain of non-volcanic origin. Such islands include Aruba, Bahamas, Barbados, Bonaire, the Cayman Islands or Anguilla. Guadeloupe is an overseas department of France and one of the twenty-six regions of France, an integral part of the Republic. Being part of France, Guadeloupe is also part of the European Union and its currency is the Euro.

History: The seafaring Taino people moved into the southern Bahamas around the seventh century from Cuba and Hispaniola. They came to be known as the Lucayans and there were an estimated forty thousand Lucayans on the Bahamas at the time of Christopher Columbus’ arrival. His first landfall here was on San Salvador Island, also known as Watling’s Island, in the southern part of Bahamas.

Later Bahamian Lucayans were taken to Hispaniola as slaves. In two short decades many Lucayan societies ceased to exist due to forced labour, warfare, disease, emigration and out marriage. After the Lucayan population was eliminated, the Bahamian islands were virtually unoccupied until the English settlers came from Bermuda in 1647 and settled on the island of Eleuthera.

In 1718 the Bahamas became a British crown colony. Some 8,000 loyalists and their slaves moved to the Bahamas in the late 1700s from New York, Florida and the Carolinas. Slavery was ended in the Bahamas in 1834 and this led to many slaves fleeing the USA and making a dangerous crossing of the Atlantic for the promise of a free life in the Bahamas. In 1964 the British made the Bahamas self-governing. And in 1973, the Bahamas became fully independent, but remained a member of the Commonwealth of Nations.
